9 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

1. FOCUSING
a. Have the attention of ALL students
b. Don’t teach over chatter

2. DIRECT INSTRUCTION
a. Tell the students what the agenda is for the day

3. MONITORING
a. Move around in the classroom
b. Circulate
c. Make sure students are doing work and doing it correctly

4. MODELING
a. Values are caught, not taught
b. Do not yell. Speak in a soft voice

5. NON-VERBAL CUEING
a. Facial expressions, hand signals
b. Clapping 3x then have students do it back
c. Raise hand for silence; flip lights

6. LOW-PROFILE INTERVENTION
a. Don’t get in verbal confrontation with a student
b. Be quiet and calm (keep your cool)

7. ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE
a. Good mix of praise
b. Rules are laid out and enforced
c. The teacher is the boss

8. ASSERTIVE I-MESSAGES
a. Statements that the teacher uses when confronting a student who is misbehaving
b. “I need you to do….”

9. HUMANISTIC I-MESSAGES
a. Expressions of our feelings
b. 3 part structure
i. “When you talk when I’m talking….”
ii. “……I have to stop my teaching……”
iii. “…….which frustrates me.”
